The American  professional digital camera company RED, is known for manufacturing high quality digital cinematography and photography cameras and accessories.  The company is also famously associated with marque movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2,” “Transformers: The Last Knight,” and “The Martian,” among many others filmed with their cameras. And now Red is getting into the smartphone game with a very unique entry. On July 6, 2017, the high end camera company announced on their website, that it plans to release a smartphone in early 2018 called the Hydrogen One.  The new smartphone is reported to be a high-powered, unlocked Android smartphone, with a high price tag, starting at about $1,200.

While details were a bit sketchy in the Red press release,  some of the specifications of their entry level smart phone sound promising.  The modular phone will offer a versatile 5.7-inch holographic display with the ability to switch from normal 2D media, to stereo 3D, and an assault on your senses holistic “4-view content” viewer thingy that hasn’t been explained yet. Hydrogen One is promised to offer full support for augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality without plugging in additional gadgets.

The phone is currently available for pre-order on RED’s website, with “special pricing” at $1,195 for the aluminum version, and a $1,595 titanium version. The company states the phone will ship in early 2018, but adds the following disclaimers to heed:

  • The design of Hydrogen One could change, which could be taken to mean that not all features will make in first release.
  • The modular attachments won’t be available at launch, with no word on what happens later on for early buyers.
  • After this initial release due to display production limitations, Red will not be able to fill all orders on time.
  •  The company will not guarantee the stated prices at the time of release.
